I couldn't agree more - the sterile, carbon copies of new houses are not for me! Give me charm, character, quirks, history...
I feel the same about purchasing things. I love thrifting and buying secondhand for this reason. I recently purchased ceramic bowls from the 1940s, and I couldn't help but think about all of the families who used them and the memories made. Imagine the holidays they've seen, recipes tried, and quite possibly the person who originally bought and used them is a grandparent now...the writer in me can get carried away spinning these stories 😅
I love feeling connected to the pas and giving something new life!
I am in the process of building a house, somewhere I will probably live from 28 to 98, with children and into old age (I hope). I am trying so hard to introduce this magic and not build something sterile and ✨too new✨ I am so lucky, and I don’t want to waste that luck. I want it to be beautiful!
Oh that sounds like such a lovely process! I am sure it will be pure magic, and the magic will just increase with every year. Wishing you so much luck in the process!
The "quiet crusade against optimization" is a great phrase. We’ve streamlined so much friction out of modern layouts that we’ve accidentally streamlined out the personality too. A neighborhood with zero "wasted space" or a park bench engineered so nobody can lie down just ends up feeling incredibly cold.
I am so taken with all these thoughts. Optimisation defeats soul, in my experience and in my view. It defeats character. That of a place and that of a person.
I live on a housing estate in England. It has a totally different vibe from the other estates in my town. It was built in the 50s with big gardens and surrounded by fields. Everyone knows each other, the kids all play out together, it's like its still in the 90s. People are desperate to move onto the estate. My friend sighs everytime I mention home and says "I just love how it is there". It really has a magic feel to it sometimes.
Ahh, I have totally experienced this! For me, I realized the numerology of homes had a lot to do with the instant feeling of comfort and peace when I walked inside. But aside from numerology, I totally agree that the energy of certain places can be super compelling. i.e. the town we live in in MX has such magnetic energy, people love visiting and living here and will visit one time and know this is where they want to stay (as is what happened for us)! Maybe it has to do with ley lines (like energetic meridians of the Earth), who knows? Thanks for writing this piece, Aurinna!
Hard agree! I love that boring beige is falling out of favour and COLOUR is coming back 👏 As a self-confessed lover of neutrals I am loving experimenting with colour and texture at home. My current favourite thing that I'm obsessing over is ceramics 😍 Long may character and magic reign!
I loved this. The idea that magic lives in the imperfect, the unexpected, and the slightly strange felt deeply true.
Thank you for reading! So glad the idea resonated 💕
Thank you for putting words to something that I have thought about my whole life!!
Awww thank you so much. That’s the best compliment ❤️
I love this concept, I think this is what differentiates house from home ! Also I love art work sorta pic, it's so cool

Ah I love that! I feel exactly the same way, the objects start holding all the memories and you can feel it! ❤️

Exactly! It’s like we forgot that personality is also a part of humanity, not just functionality!

Thank you for reading! I am so glad I am not the only one who feels that way ❤️

That sounds so lovely! It is weird how some places just have that special edge, even if the practical differences are not that huge. ❤️

Wow, that is so interesting! Never thought that numerology could also play a role.
Yes, I think it is a combination of SO MANY energetic things, and it is cool how people just gravitate towards certain places 🌚
This is so reflective. It had me thinking about “it” and inspired me to pay more attention
Thank you so much, hope it makes you notice the magic ✨
Beautiful 🥰
Thank you so much! ❤️

Yes! We all deserve more character and fun! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you again 💕💕💕
Awww, thank you so much, such kind words. Yes! I also do my own story art.
Yes, I also love neutrals, but I think we need to break it up with something. A little craziness goes a long way, haha.
